During their phone conversation, Trump and Putin discussed the latest diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement on the Iran conflict, Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov says.
US President Donald Trump has told Russian President Vladimir Putin that ending the conflict in Ukraine was vital and he was ready to help, Russian news agencies quoted Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov as saying.
"As regards the Ukrainian conflict, Donald Trump again emphasised that a cessation of hostilities was vital," Ushakov was quoted as telling journalists on Sunday. "He said he was ready to act with European partners and Kiev, including in talks at the G7 summit," he added, referring to the summit of G7 countries this week in France.
Ushakov told the journalists that US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who have led US-brokered negotiations aimed at ending the Ukraine war, would soon be undertaking another visit to Russia. During their phone conversation, Trump and Putin also discussed the latest diplomatic efforts to reach an agreement on the Iran conflict, Ushakov said.
"The situation around the memorandum between the US and Iran was discussed," Ushakov was quoted as saying. “Donald Trump said an agreement was close, and he expects that the results of the difficult but ultimately successful negotiations can be made public. Ahead of the G7 meeting in Evian-les-Bains, where leaders are due to discuss the Ukraine war on Tuesday, Zelenskyy said he had discussed with Trump the position of their international partners.
"We talked about what could help to bring peace closer right now, and I updated the president on the latest developments on the battlefield and how our position has strengthened," he said, adding:US-brokered efforts to end the war have stalled as Washington remains focused on the conflict in Iran. Zelenskyy, however, has argued that recent battlefield gains have created an opportunity for a peace deal.
Earlier this month, he called on Putin to hold face-to-face talks to secure a ceasefire, a proposal backed by the leaders of Britain, France and Germany, who said Europe would play a role in the process. Putin has dismissed the need for direct talks with Zelenskyy, insisting Russian forces are advancing and reiterating demands that Ukraine cede additional territory in exchange for peace, conditions Kyiv has rejected.
Zelenskyy also thanked Trump for US military support, particularly Javelin anti-tank missiles and Patriot air defence systems. Last month, he appealed to Trump and Congress for additional Patriot batteries, which Ukraine considers critical for defending against Russian ballistic missile attacks.
