Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a Friday White House press briefing that President Trump authorizedagainst Iran following an episode of escalating tit-for-tat retaliations set off by the U.S. killing Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani.
Pompeo said the sanctions are meant to hurt Iran’s construction, manufacturing, textile and mining industries, and 17 of the sanctions are aimed at the steel and iron sectors. In addition, eight senior Iranian officials, called the “brute squad” by Pompeo, are being targeted sanctions for their alleged involvement in “destabilizing activities,” including Tuesday night’s ballistic missile strike.
