Brady Press Briefing Room of the White House August 11, 2025 in Washington, DC. Trump announced he will use his authority to place the DC Metropolitan Police Department under federal control to assist in crime prevention in the nation’s capital. Also pictured is U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi. President Trump announced he will look at reclassifying marijuana and will “make a determination over the next, I would say, over the next few weeks,” at a press conference on Monday. The move comes after a recent fundraiser dinner hosted at his New Jersey golf club earlier this month. At this gathering, Trump told attendees he would consider reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug. If marijuana is reclassified, it would move from a Schedule I drug, grouped with drugs such as LSD and ecstasyThis will drop marijuana from a drug “with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,” to a drug with “moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence.”Rivers encouraged Trump to continue from where the Biden administration left off, and consider reclassifying marijuana and expanding research on medical cannabis. Close to a year ago, Trump hinted at changing policies surrounding marijuana to make it easier for adults to access safe products and allow more states to pursue legalization. His support for removing marijuana from the same legal category as heroin ushered in a wide range of support from younger voters to more liberal-leaning voters.“As I have previously stated, I believe it is time to end needless arrests and incarcerations of adults for small amounts of marijuana for personal use,” he wrote. Trump also talked about the topic with pro-marijuana rapper Joseph Edgar Foreman, known as Afroman, at the Libertarian Party Convention held in Washington, DC last May. Reclassifying marijuana has been a long-held conversation; in 2022, former President Joe Biden ordered the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services to review the possibility of reclassifying the drug. However, Biden left office before the DOJ’s rule was finalized, and a hearing scheduled after Trump took office this January was canceled. The hearing has not been rescheduled. Trump himself is not a fan of marijuana despite his public support for it. The president has been open about his distaste for the drug, and at a separate dinner event with donors in 2018, Trump shared concerns about marijuana, saying, marijuana “does cause an I.Q. problem.” Currently, 40 states have legalized the use of medical marijuana.
