Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump have increasingly turned to podcasters, social media influencers and other personalities.

Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally at Madison Square Garden, Sunday, Oct. 27, 2024, in New York.

While the well-known players in the news industry still have some influence over the narratives of the campaign and stakes of the election, they are seeing presidential candidates turn more often to personalities that don’t specialize in covering politics on a day-to-day basis., whose podcast draws one of the biggest audiences in the U.S. that is made up predominantly of younger males that his campaign is seeking to court.

Trump has still made some appearances on cable television, though has exclusively stuck with shows on Fox News, while running mate JD Vance has done interviews on numerous traditional political news programs and print outlets. Harris has also kept up a steady routine of traditional venues as well, appearing on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” participating in a CNN town hall along with an earlier interview and going on ABC’s “The View.”

The consumption of the podcasts alone is significantly higher than they could get on any television program. Trump’s interview on Rogan gotin a single weekend, vastly higher than either could get on any television programming outside of the largest events. The first and only debate between Trump and Harris was watched by some 67.1 million people but audiences for daily programming are significantly smaller.
