President Trump dismisses Archivist Colleen J. Shogan, citing the need for a new leader. This move follows past tensions between Trump and the National Archives over classified documents.

President Trump has terminated Colleen J. Shogan from her position as Archivist of the United States. This official is responsible for safeguarding and granting access to government documents. Sergio Gor, the director of the Presidential Personnel Office, announced Shogan's dismissal on Friday evening. Shogan had served in this role since 2023. Gor stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, 'At the direction of @realDonald Trump the Archivist of the United States has been dismissed tonight.

We thank Colleen Shogan for her service.' This action was not entirely unforeseen. Earlier this month, President Trump informed radio host Hugh Hewitt that 'we will have a new archivist.' However, on Thursday, a senior archivist official told CBS News that 'there was no word that anything is changing.' The official added at the time, 'The archivist looks forward to continuing her strong working relationship with the president and first lady.' The Archivist of the United States, who oversees the National Archives and Records Administration, is typically a nonpartisan position that receives minimal public scrutiny. However, President Trump has previously expressed displeasure towards the agency, particularly after its involvement in the case concerning his handling of classified documents. Upon leaving office in early 2021, President Trump allegedly transported numerous boxes of presidential records, including nearly 340 documents marked as classified, to his residence in Florida. President Trump was subsequently charged with 40 felonies, including charges related to his alleged refusal to surrender certain documents. However, after President Trump's victory in the November election, then-special counsel Jack Smith recused himself from the case due to Justice Department policy prohibiting the prosecution of a sitting president.CBS News has attempted to contact the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) for comment
