... [+]: President Donald Trump on Monday said 3M will produce 55.5 million masks per month for health workers in the U.S., ending a days-long conflict between the White House and the mask manufacturer over Trump’s use of the Defense Production Act forcing 3M to prioritize domestic orders.

3M will import 55.5 million N95 face masks per month, primarily from its manufacturing facilities in China, specifically for U.S. health workers, totalling 166.5 million masks over the next three months. The additional imports will supplement the 35 million N95 masks the company currently makes in the U.S, said 3M CEO Mike Roman, though not all of those will go to customers in the U.S.from 3M, the deal reached with the Trump Administration will allow 3M to continue exporting masks to Latin America and Canada, where 3M is the primary source of supply.

The White House had originally wanted 3M to cease all exports to those areas, but 3M pushed back against the request because doing so, the company said, has humanitarian implications and may cause other countries to retaliate. The deal comes after Trump invoked the Defense Production Act requiring 3M to prioritize mask orders from the federal government instead of foreign buyers.3M’s selling of masks to other countries was a point of contention with the Trump administration.
