President Trump endorsed former football coach Tommy Tuberville in the GOP runoff for U.S. Senate in Alabama, throwing his influence behind a rival of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions
WASHINGTON—.
“Tommy was a terrific head football coach at Auburn University,” Mr. Trump wrote in tweets late Tuesday. “He is a REAL LEADER who will never let MAGA/KAG, or our Country, down! ... He will be a great Senator for the people of Alabama. Coach Tommy Tuberville, a winner, has my Complete and Total Endorsement. I love Alabama!”
Mr. Tuberville and Mr. Sessions emerged from a Republican primary to compete in a runoff and the race is tight. Given Mr. Trump's command over the GOP electorate, his endorsement could be decisive.Mr. Sessions formerly served in the Senate and was one of Mr. Trump's early backers in the 2016 campaign. He was then picked to serve as attorney general but angered the president by recusing himself from the probe into 2016 election interference.
