Trump Endorsements Face Key Tests in Deep South Primary Runoffs

Voters in Alabama and Georgia head to the polls for critical Republican primary runoffs where former President Donald Trump's endorsements are central to high-stakes Senate and gubernatorial contests, with national implications for party control and future leadership.

The upcoming Republican primary runoff s in Alabama and Georgia put President Donald Trump's endorsements to the test in three crucial Deep South statewide races. In Alabama, Trump-endorsed Representative Barry Moore competes in a runoff to secure the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor.

Moore faces former Navy SEAL sniper Jared Hudson. Moore, the frontrunner after leading the primary with 39.2 percent compared to Hudson's 25.6 percent, has faced setbacks due to "stolen valor" allegations against him and efforts to tie him to Washington politics.

However, he benefits from over $10 million in support from groups like the Club for Growth and crypto industry PACs, as well as Trump's backing. Meanwhile, in Alabama's gubernatorial race, Tuberville avoided a runoff and will be the Republican nominee. In Georgia, two statewide Republican primary runoffs feature Trump-endorsed candidates. In the gubernatorial contest, Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones, a long-time Trump ally, faces billionaire Rick Jackson, who has reportedly spent more than $100 million of his personal wealth.

Jones has the endorsement of term-limited Governor Brian Kemp, despite Kemp's previously rocky relationship with Trump. The winner will take on former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms in the November general election. In Georgia's U.S. Senate race, Representative Mike Collins, who secured a late endorsement from Trump after polling showed him favored, battles former football coach Derek Dooley. Dooley was recruited by Governor Kemp, and the two campaigned together closely.

Collins is considered the heavy favorite. His eventual opponent in the general election will be incumbent Senator Jon Ossoff, a formidable fundraiser with reported presidential ambitions for 2028. Ossoff's potential future aspirations add a strategic layer to the gubernatorial race, as the next governor would appoint his successor if the Senate seat becomes vacant, a seat that could determine the chamber's majority given historically narrow margins.

Additional noteworthy contests include the District of Columbia's mayoral and delegate races, marking the first new mayor in twelve years and the succession for Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton's long-held seat after her retirement. Mayor Muriel Bowser has maintained a functional relationship with Trump despite his previous federal intervention in the city.

In Oklahoma, Republican primaries for governor and congressional seats are set, with Trump-endorsed Representative Kevin Hern favored to fill the remainder of Senator Markwayne Mullin's term after his appointment as Secretary of Homeland Security. California's special primary in the 14th Congressional District will decide the replacement for disgraced Representative Eric Swalwell. Polls close at varying times: 7 p.m. ET in Georgia; 8 p.m. ET in Alabama, Oklahoma, and Washington, D.C.

; and 11 p.m. ET in California, where voting is largely by mail. Early results show Mike Collins as the projected Republican nominee in Georgia's Senate race, with Decision Desk HQ and NBC News calling the contest roughly 70 minutes after polls closed. With about 44.1 percent of the projected vote counted, Collins led Dooley 53.2 percent to 46.8 percent.

Polls have now closed across the key states, and with over 38 percent of expected votes counted in Georgia, Collins maintained a 51.7 to 48.3 percent lead, though the two major runoff races in the state remain uncalled
