US President Donald Trump has defended his response to the Covid-19 outbreak, and attacked the media for its coverage of his handling of it

At a press conference last night, Mr Trump defended his response to the crisis, and attacked the media for its coverage of his handling of it.

The president asserted he had the ultimate authority to re-open the largely shuttered economy despite an earlier deference to US state governors and constitutional questions about whether that decision-making fell within his purview. Mr Trump, who played down the seriousness of the virus in its initial stages, has chafed at media coverage suggesting he did not do enough to prevent its spread.

Mr Trump said he and Dr Fauci had been on the same page "from the beginning" and declared he liked the respected doctor. "I think he's a wonderful guy," Mr Trump said, while adding that not everyone was happy with the health expert.
