In so many ways, the coronavirus epidemic has upended society and made normal what was previously unfathomable.During his daily coronavirus briefing on Thursday, Newsom said that the federal government had sent California 90,000 testing swabs out of a promised initial shipment of 100,000 — assistance that Trump had committed to during a Wednesday conversation with Newsom. That phrase is one Trump's election campaign has regularly deployed to make his case for a second term.
Later in the day, Trump amplified Newsom's words during a White House briefing. "He said 'promises made, promises kept.' He actually said that in a statement today," Trump said of Newsom, trying to make the case that states are pleased with his actions. Formerly enthusiastic combatants, Newsom and Trump have entered an armistice since the pandemic began. Newsom consistently lauds the federal government's response, and Trump has kind words for Newsom. "He's done a really terrific job in California," Trump said Wednesday at the White House.
The Trump campaign has already turned Newsom's praise into videos seeking to showcase bipartisan support for the president's coronavirus leadership — the type of development that would have been unthinkable months ago.
