President Trump holds coronavirus briefing a day after the U.S. COVID-19 death toll surpasses 150,000.
Thursday for questioning in a tweet whether the November presidential election should be delayed over concerns about voting during the pandemic. Congressional Republicans bluntly rejected the idea and Democrats accused the president of attempting to sow doubt if the election doesn't go his way.
During the scheduled 5:30 pm EST briefing, Trump will almost certainly also face questions about a Commerce Department report Thursday that found the nation's economy contracted at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 32.9% in the second quarter,, as businesses have had to confront lockdown orders and customers wary of leaving their homes.
Meanwhile, lawmakers continue negotiations over another round of economic stimulus to offset the effects of the pandemic. The two parties remain far from a deal, and White House advisers expressed pessimism this week about reaching one anytime soon.
