The former FBI official was involved in the investigation of the former president's ties to Russia amid the 2016 election.
Prosecutors said that McGonigal is alleged to have tried toafter leaving the FBI in 2018. He is also alleged to have taken money off the Russian billionaire in 2019 in order to investigate a rival oligarch.
While not connected to the investigation, McGonigal was one of the leading figures behind the investigation into alleged Russian collusion in the 2016 election.
