As companies plead with the president to avoid driving up the prices of consumer goods, Trump has a new strategy—convince them bad outcomes are their own fault
by over 200 footwear industry groups concerned about the effects that tariffs on an additional $250 billion of Chinese goods might have on their prices. “There is no doubt that tariffs act as hidden taxes paid by American individuals and families,” the letter from the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America read.
The letter also acknowledged Trump’s decision to suspend some tariffs until December—so as not to impact holiday shopping—but added that the September deadline “will make it impossible for hardworking American individuals and families to escape the harm that comes from these tax increases.” For his part, Trump has continually touted the strength of the U.S. economy as reason for his 2020 re-election, especially against
