9, 2026, in Washington. President Donald Trump has reversed course and decided he will now invite Democrats to an annual gathering of the nation’s governors at the White House. The gathering at the White House is part of the annual meeting of the National Governors Association in Washington later in February. The association is nonpartisan and includes all U.S. governors. A meeting at the White House with the president had traditionally been a part of the association’s schedule. The meeting was also a bipartisan event in the past. Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt of Oklahoma, current chairperson of the governors association, told his fellow governors that all members are now invited, according to CNN. He cited a “misunderstanding in scheduling” for the initial exclusions of Democrats. “I am writing to inform you that President Donald J. Trump is inviting all governors of the 55 States and territories to the Friday, Feb. 20 NGA Business Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. EST,” Stitt wrote Wednesday,. “He was very clear in his communications with me that this is a National Governors Association’s event, and he looks forward to hosting you and hearing from governors across the country. President Trump said this was always his intention, and we have addressed the misunderstanding in scheduling.” In a Truth Social post later on Wednesday, Trump said that Democratic Govs. Wes Moore of Maryland and Jared Polis of Colorado are still excluded, Trump also denied he had tried to keep Democrats from the meeting and criticized Stitt as a “RINO,” or Republican in name only., adding that he “even invited” two of his political foes, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. “So, as usual with him, Stitt got it WRONG! The Invitations were sent out to all other Governors, Democrat and Republican.” Moore still received an invite on Wednesday to the meeting, according to a source familiar with the matter, CBS said.Judges fire Trump loyalist who was top federal prosecutor in Upstate NY; SU alum appointed to replace him‘The president’s home’ Trump wants to keep Democrats out of White House dinner for governorsKevin's current focus is data journalism for Syracuse.com on topics including real estate, crime, the economy, education and more.
