President-elect Trump supports a single, large reconciliation bill for conservative policy changes, aiming to have it signed by May. This decision aims to unify Republicans and solidify their agenda for next year.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., informed Republican lawmakers on Saturday that President-elect Trump favors a conservative policy revamp through a single, comprehensive bill. According to three sources speaking to Fox News Digital, Trump desires both the House and Senate to present such a bill for his signature by May.

This presidential endorsement is anticipated to alleviate the escalating internal division within the Republican party regarding the method of enacting their agenda next year through a procedure known as 'reconciliation.' Lawmakers intend to utilize this process to pass conservative policy and budget changes. House Republicans convened behind closed doors at Washington's Fort McNair on Saturday to deliberate on this plan. Reconciliation enables the Senate to circumvent its customary 60-vote threshold in favor of a simple majority, provided the legislation centers on budgetary and fiscal matters. Both parties have historically employed reconciliation to enact widespread policy modifications within a single bill. However, the legislation undergoes stringent scrutiny, with the Senate parliamentarian responsible for determining which provisions are pertinent to U.S. fiscal matters. Notably, Democrats previously attempted to utilize reconciliation to pass mass amnesty measures, but their efforts were thwarted. Republicans may encounter similar obstacles in their endeavor to incorporate border security provisions into the bill. Their objective also includes extending Trump's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017, along with enacting measures related to energy and defense. This apparent decision by Johnson on Saturday follows a period of discord among Congressional Republicans over whether to advance one or two reconciliation bills. It is a process typically employed once annually, but Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., proposed last month a plan to divide Republicans' priorities into two bills – one focusing on border and defense matters and another dedicated to preserving Trump's tax policy
