President Donald Trump has announced a new wave of US airstrikes on Iran, declaring the recent ceasefire agreement over. The strikes follow Iranian attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and come after a state-backed call for Trump's death at a funeral for Ayatollah Khamenei. The US military says the operation aims to degrade Iran's ability to threaten navigation in the Persian Gulf, while Trump also threatened to reinstate a naval blockade. The escalation has driven oil prices to a three-week high and briefly dipped US stock futures.
President Donald Trump has authorized a new series of airstrikes against Iran following Iran ian attacks on commercial vessels transiting the critical Strait of Hormuz. The announcement, made during a NATO summit in Turkey, explicitly declared the recent US- Iran ceasefire agreement terminated and signaled further military action.
According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes are designed to further degrade Iran's capacity to threaten freedom of navigation in the Persian Gulf. A CENTCOM spokesperson emphasized that the United States is holding Iran accountable for what was described as unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews in the internationally recognized waterway. This escalation follows a particularly inflammatory moment at the funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, where a state-affiliated speaker publicly called for the death of President Trump.
The latest US strikes targeted facilities in and around Chabahar, a key southern Iranian port city, causing power outages, according to Iranian state media. Additional explosions were reported in the coastal city of Konarak. The President had previously threatened to reimpose a US naval blockade on Iranian ports, a measure that had been lifted as part of the ceasefire memorandum of understanding signed just last month.
Speaking to reporters, Trump stated, "We hit them very hard last night... probably hit them hard again tonight. I'll give a little warning, we're going to hit them hard tonight," confirming the ongoing nature of the operation and his consideration of reinstating the blockade. The geopolitical tension has immediately impacted global markets. Oil prices surged overnight, with Brent crude reaching $78.39 per barrel, its highest level since June 19.
On Wall Street, stock market futures dipped ahead of the opening bell, with the NASDAQ, Dow Jones, and S&P 500 all trading approximately one point lower in pre-market activity, reflecting investor concerns over potential supply disruptions and broader conflict
