President-elect Donald Trump continued to ramp up the pressure on Hamas to agree to a deal to release the remaining Israeli hostages by Inauguration Day.
President-elect Donald Trump speaks during a news conference at Mar-a-Lago, Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2024, in Palm Beach, Fla. to agree to a deal to release the remaining Israeli hostages by the time he enters office on Jan. 20.
“If they're not back by the time I get into office, all hell will break out in the Middle East, and it will not be good for Hamas, and it will not be good, frankly, for anyone.” Trump said. “All hell will break out. I don't have to say anymore, but that's what it is. And they should have given them back a long time. They should have never taken.”
“I believe we’ve been on the verge of it. I don’t want to discuss sort of what’s delayed it,” he said at the press conference. Striking a cease-fire agreement has been a priority for the Biden administration as the war has dragged on and the civilian death toll has continued to rise. But there have been numerous obstacles along the way in getting both sides to the table and Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist group, has frequently thrown a wrench into discussions.
