The Trump administration is undertaking a major restructuring of the federal government, aiming to cut what it deems as wasteful spending and realign agency missions with President Trump's priorities. Several agencies, including USAID and the Department of Education, are facing significant funding cuts and potential abolition. The moves have sparked legal challenges from worker unions and advocacy groups who argue the president overstepped his authority. The administration's efforts are also facing bipartisan opposition, particularly regarding the potential impact on crucial programs like foreign aid and education.
The Trump administration is moving to reshape the federal government, cutting what it views as wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars and alter the missions of agencies to align with President Donald Trump’s priorities.
USAID, which oversees humanitarian, development and security programs in over 100 countries, has been the biggest target so far in the government cutback efforts from DOGE. The administration has revoked nearly all funding for the agency, bringing a halt to aid and development programs around the world.
A potential shutdown of USAID has run into some bipartisan opposition over concerns that programs that save lives through medical and food assistance could be cut, and that the U.S. may lose some influence countering China and Russia by winding down operations.
Abolishing the agency would also require congressional approval, though Republicans have been supportive of such a measure in the past. Its homepage has already been shut down and Musk wrote “CFPB RIP” on X, formerly known as Twitter.
