The Trump administration's newly implemented asylum policy has left many asylum seekers in a state of confusion and uncertainty. The abrupt closure of the CBP One application process, which allowed asylum seekers to schedule appointments at ports of entry, has effectively halted the ability of many to seek asylum. While the administration cites security concerns as justification for these changes, critics argue that they create unnecessary hardship for vulnerable individuals seeking refuge.
Nine days into President Donald Trump's administration, the future of U.S. asylum policy remains uncertain, leaving many asylum seekers on both sides of the border in a state of confusion. Alexis Lucero, an immigration attorney, said, 'Last week, there was a removal of the CBP One application process where an asylum seeker could actually seek an appointment to present themselves at a port of entry to seek asylum. That process is completely gone.
' Lucero explained that the Trump administration has indefinitely paused asylum applications after signing an executive order that also shut down an app allowing many to apply online. 'Migrants are no longer able to actually do that from the Mexican side,' Lucero said, adding that the administration has not replaced the program with any alternatives.'We're telling people that are in Mexico right now to wait as long as you can before making a very risky move coming north,' Lucero said. Adolpho Telles, former El Paso GOP Chair and a member of the State Republican Executive Committee, defended the administration's actions, citing security concerns.Telles attributed the suffering of those waiting to apply for asylum to the Biden administration and argued that many asylum seekers do not meet the criteria for asylum. 'Ask them why and they’re coming for a better life, to live a better life. And I don’t blame them for that, but that’s not a valid reason to come to this country,' he said. Telles also suggested that those fleeing for safety should seek refuge in the nearest country rather than traveling all the way to the United States. 'Should've never come all the way to the United States, they should’ve gone to the first country that was next to them,' he said. As the Trump administration's asylum policy continues to evolve, many are left waiting for clarity on the next steps
