The Trump administration is ramping up efforts to address alleged leaks within the federal government.

FILE - Signal app on a smartphone is seen on a mobile device screen Tuesday, March 25, 2025, in Chicago. The Trump administration is ramping up efforts to address alleged leaks within the federal government, with two intelligence officials already referred to the Department of Justice for criminal charges and a third referral imminent, according to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard .

The referrals pertain to alleged leaks of classified information to journalists, which Gabbard described as the work of "deep state criminals." "We will not allow this to continue," Gabbard told Fox News on Friday. "We take this very seriously, it is illegal to leak classified information. So what you’re seeing here is me carrying out on the promise and the mandate the American people gave Trump." One of the leaks reportedly involved information used in a Washington Post article about connections between Venezuela and the Tren de Aragua gang. Gabbard expressed herto collaborate with the Department of Justice and the FBI to "investigate, terminate, and prosecute" those responsible for the leaks. Tom Dupree, a former Assistant Attorney General, highlighted the potential consequences of such leaks. "It can have a very serious trickle-down effect. One thing is, of course, the information in question is now put in the public sphere, it can be seen by the general public. People on the hill can see it and wonder what’s going on in the agency if information that’s supposed to be kept classified is not kept classified," he said. The crackdown is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to identify and remove individuals perceived as disloyal. Last week, three top aides at the Pentagon were escorted out of the building, with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accusing them of leaking information related to a private Signal group chat discussing attack plans in Yemen. The second Signal group chat involving Hegseth also included members of his family and his attorney. The aidesa joint statement over the weekend stating, "At this time, we still have not been told what exactly we were investigated for." Dan Caldwell, a former adviser to Hegseth, expressed his dismay over the situation while speaking with Tucker Carlson. "I've been a friend and supporter of Pete Hegseth for a long time, and I'm just personally devastated by this," he said. The ongoing investigation into leaks and subsequent firings at the Pentagon has drawn criticism, including an opinion piece by former top spokesman John Ullyot. Ullyot, who resigned earlier this month, described the Department of Defense as being in "total chaos" and referred to the recent weeks as "the month from hell."
