The Trump administration has suspended a national program that provides funding to states for installing electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment, marking the latest move to reverse pro-EV policies. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which faced criticism from Republicans for slow progress and alleged waste, is being put on hold while it is retooled to align with the administration's priorities. The decision has raised concerns about the future of EV charging infrastructure and its potential impact on the adoption of electric vehicles.
The Trump administration’s war on electric cars continues with the halt of a national program that sends money to states to install EV charging equipment. It was the latest move by President Donald Trump to reverse Biden-era EV policies — even as those policies have personally enriched his top ally, Elon Musk.
According to the Q4 update, there are 126 public EV charging ports in operation across 31 NEVI stations in nine states, an 83 percent increase in open NEVI ports over the previous quarter. A total of 41 states have released at least their first round of solicitations, as of November 2024. Of those states, 35 have issued conditional awards or put agreements in place for over 3,560 fast-charging ports across more than 890 charging station locations.
