The Trump administration has implemented a freeze on numerous health agency reports and public communications, including those from the CDC and FDA. The freeze aims to review and control all outgoing communications until they are approved by political appointees.

President Donald Trump's new administration has implemented a freeze on numerous health agency reports and public communications, encompassing organizations like the CDC and FDA . Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Dorothy Fink issued a memo instructing agency staff leaders to halt all communications, including regulations, guidance, announcements, press releases, social media posts, and website updates until they receive approval from a political appointee.

This pause, effective until February 1st, also applies to publications in the Federal Register and the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), a scientific publication by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The directive affects key agencies such as the CDC, the National Institutes of Health, and the Food and Drug Administration, all instrumental in combating epidemics, safeguarding the nation's food supply, and researching disease cures. Several federal health officials confirmed the communication freeze to The Associated Press, speaking anonymously due to restrictions on discussing the matter.A former HHS official explained that while it's common for incoming administrations to temporarily halt agency communications for review, the typical transition process involves the presidential team ensuring a smooth document issuance system by inauguration day. Steven Grossman, a former HHS official now consulting for food and drug companies, highlighted the hierarchical nature of the executive branch, noting that every new administration seeks to control crucial commitments and positions until new teams are in place and a stable hierarchy is established. During his first term, President Trump's political appointees attempted to exert influence over the CDC's MMWR journal, which had published COVID-19 pandemic information contradicting White House messaging. Fink's memo allows exceptions for communications affecting critical health, safety, environmental, financial, or national security functions, but these are subject to review. Notably, the FDA issued notices about warning letters to companies and a drug safety notice on Tuesday and Wednesday, suggesting some exceptions may be made for time-sensitive public health information
