The Trump administration has taken a strong stance against antisemitism by establishing a new task force within the Department of Justice to address the issue on school and college campuses. This move comes in response to a year of heightened protests and concerns about antisemitism on university campuses.

The Trump administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Monday the formation of a new task force dedicated to combating antisemitism in the United States. This initiative follows President Donald Trump’s executive order calling for a stronger stance against antisemitism. The task force will prioritize rooting out “anti-Semitic harassment in schools and on college campuses ,” according to a DOJ press release.

Representatives from the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services will collaborate with the task force. “Anti-Semitism in any environment is repugnant to this Nation’s ideals,” said Leo Terrell, the task force head, in a statement. “The Department takes seriously our responsibility to eradicate this hatred wherever it is found. The Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism is the first step in giving life to President Trump’s renewed commitment to ending anti-Semitism in our schools.” This latest move by the Trump administration to address antisemitism comes amidst a year of heightened protests on U.S. college campuses. The demonstrations intensified following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023. The White House last week declared its intention to revoke student visas from individuals deemed 'Hamas sympathizers,' citing a concerning surge in 'radicalism' on college campuses. Trump, in a fact sheet, also pledged to deport any undocumented individuals who participated in 'pro-jihadist protests.' 'My promise to Jewish Americans is this: With your vote, I will be your defender, your protector, and I will be the best friend Jewish Americans have ever had in the White House,' the fact sheet stated.Harvard University settled two lawsuits alleging antisemitism in January, shortly after Trump's inauguration. The university agreed to allocate “additional academic resources” to study antisemitism and publish an online FAQ document clarifying that students of Jewish or Israeli backgrounds are protected under the school's non-discrimination and anti-bullying policies. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., nominated by Trump for U.N. ambassador, highlighted antisemitism as a pressing global issue during her Senate confirmation hearing. 'It's one of the reasons why, in my conversation with President Trump, I was interested in this position,” she stated. “Because if you look at the antisemitic rot within the United Nations, there are more resolutions targeting Israel than any other country, any other crisis, combined.' During a 2023 congressional hearing, Rep. Stefanik also questioned several university leaders about their handling of campus antisemitism, including then-Harvard President Claudine Gay. Gay faced criticism for her inability to definitively state whether calls for Jewish genocide violated university conduct policy. She later clarified her stance, emphasizing Harvard's commitment to combating all forms of bigotry and hate speech
