As immigration officials run out of detention space for migrants who might be deported, the Trump administration plans to send thousands to the U.S. naval base in Cuba.

By Marianne LeVine and Maria Sacchetti, The Washington PostIn this photo reviewed by U.S. military officials, the control tower of Camp VI detention facility is seen on April 17, 2019, in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba.

“Today, the first flights from the United States to Guantánamo Bay with illegal migrants are underway,” Leavitt said on Fox Business. Trump said last week that Guantánamo would be used to detain “the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people” and that it “will double our capacity immediately.” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the camp would be used for “temporary transit,” as the migrants’ paperwork is processed and travel arrangements are made.

Trump campaigned on a pledge to enact the “largest deportation operation in American history,” and he has repeatedly sought to portray undocumented immigrants as criminals, even though there is little evidence that they commit crimes at a higher rate than U.S. citizens. Trump officials recently directed ICE to ramp up arrests, telling agency field offices to each make 75 arrests a day for a national total of 1,200 to 1,500 per day.
