The Trump administration has issued an apology after mistakenly detaining and deporting a teenager, Any Lucia Lopez-Belloza, who was attempting to fly home to A
Lopez-Belloza was detained on Nov. 20 at Boston's Logan International Airport and deported to Honduras, despite an emergency order issued on Nov. 21 to keep her in the U.S. for at least 72 hours. The Department of Homeland Security cited a removal order from 2015 as the reason for her deportation.
Her lawyer, Todd Pomerleau, expressed dissatisfaction with the apology, stating, "To me, the apology is a great first step. But there needs to be more than saying I'm sorry and that we retrained our staff. What are you doing about the person you harmed?" He added, "You deported her on a plane and you can bring her back on a plane. I mean, I'll buy her a plane ticket right now if they want to send her back here." Pomerleau is advocating for Lopez-Belloza's return to U.S. soil, which he says can be ordered by a judge. U.S. Congressman Greg Casar says the Trump administration can bring Lopez-Belloza home with the stroke of a pen. "I'm calling for her to be brought back home and for this lawlessness from the Trump administration to stop," said Casar."I don't think she's going to be back right away in time for school," said Pomerleau. Casar is getting involved at the congressional level, stating, "I am leading a group of members of Congress calling on the Trump administration to bring Annie home today." He emphasized her deep ties to Austin, saying, "She is born in Honduras but has been raised virtually her entire life here in Austin."We are awaiting a response from the Department of Homeland Security about Pomerleau's claims of an apology and call for action.
