The Trump administration has lifted restrictions on federal agents arresting illegal immigrants in 'sensitive' locations, such as churches and schools. Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman issued a directive allowing ICE agents to make arrests in these areas, reversing a policy implemented by the Biden administration. Tom Homan, President Trump's border czar, confirmed that ICE agents have already begun deporting non-citizens and warned sanctuary cities that they will face increased ICE presence and arrests.
Acting U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Benjamine Huffman issued a directive Monday allowing federal agents to arrest illegal immigrants at churches and schools. The Biden administration barred agents from arresting illegal immigrants in such 'sensitive' areas. A spokesperson for Huffman wrote illegal immigrants 'will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest.
' 'The Trump Administration will not tie the hands of our brave law enforcement, and instead trusts them to use common sense,' the spokesperson added. Tom Homan, President Donald Trump’s border czar, said during a Tuesday appearance on Fox News confirmed ICE officials have already begun deporting non-citizens and issued a warning to sanctuary cities that continue to harbor these individuals. Homan has long been a vocal proponent of mass deportations as a remedy to the U.S.'s illegal immigration issues. ICE teams, he said, are already hard at work executing this goal. “ICE teams are out there as of today,” Homan said. “We gave them the direction to prioritize public safety threats, that’s what we’re looking for.” He also noted ICE’s operational plan for Chicago had been released, presenting a potential hazard for officers. The agency was able to address this concern without preventing its deportation plans, Homan said. “Right out of the gate, public safety threats,” Homan said. “Those who are in the country illegally that have been convicted or arrested for a serious crime.” “Let me be clear,” he added. “It’s not only public safety threats that will be arrested because in a sanctuary city, we’re not allowed to get that public safety threat in a jail, which means we gotta go into the neighborhood and find him.” These individuals, Homan said, may point ICE toward other illegal immigrants in the area. Unlike under the Biden administration, Homan said the new administration will not prevent officers from arresting an illegal alien. “Sanctuary cities are going to get exactly what they don’t want,” he warned. “More agents in the neighborhood and more collateral arrests.” Homan also described Trump’s executive orders on immigration, such as one ending birthright citizenship for illegal migrants, as “game changers.” “This is going to give us the most secure border of my lifetime,” he said. “Birthright citizenship is a major driver of illegal immigration. I’ve done this for over three decades. One of the first things an illegal alien does when they get here is get birthright U.S. citizenship for their child. That makes them immune from our laws.” Homan predicted the Supreme Court will likely be forced to weigh in on whether Trump’s order violates the Fourteenth Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the country. The American Civil Liberties Union on Monday announced a lawsuit fighting the executive order. It argued the move is unconstitutional and would represent one of the “gravest errors in American history.
