Airports had warned it would take days for flights to return to normal ahead of Thanksgiving 2025.
U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said “flight traffic is back to normal as controllers return to towers” on the first Monday morning since the end of the government shutdown. Airports had warned it would take days to return to normal once the government reopened after thousands of flights were canceled or delayed by the Federal Aviation Administration due to safety concerns.
Thanksgiving, a holiday for which millions of Americans travel across the U.S. to be with family and friends, relying heavily on air travel to do so, is just around the corner on November 27. Many air traffic controllers stayed at home while they were unpaid during the government shutdown. But President Donald Trump said those who kept coming into work despite the shutdown would be in line for a $10,000 bonus. “Air traffic controllers who didn’t miss a single day during the shutdown deserve a bonus! We are working on it RIGHT NOW!” Duffy said in a post on X. The FAA had terminated its emergency order to reduce flights as of 6 a.m. ET on Monday. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said in a statement that the “decision to rescind the order reflects the steady decline in staffing concerns across the NAS and allows us to return to normal operations.” “I am grateful for the hard work of the FAA safety and operations teams and for their focus on the safety of the traveling public,” Bedford added. This is a breaking news story. Updates to follow. An American Airlines plane takes off near the air traffic control tower at Los Angeles International Airport on November 12, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.
