CBS TV series remake of the James Cameron film True Lies gets lambasted by critics more or less across the board ahead of today's premiere.

True Lies' television reboot has received a critical drubbing ahead of its premiere later today. The CBS series is adapting the original 1994 James Cameron film, which starred Jamie Lee Curtis as Helen Tasker. Her mild-mannered husband, Harry , is secretly a spy, who must attempt to balance saving the world from a massive threat and being a good husband.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Recently, some critics shared their thoughts on the True Lies series, which premieres on CBS at 10 PM EST. Unfortunately, critical responses have almost universally dismissed the new project. While some assessments find it to be a weak retread of the original, others have much harsher comments to say about it.

How Does the True Lies TV Show Compare to the Original Film? At the time of writing, the True Lies series stands at a firmly rotten 17 percent on the review aggregator service Rotten Tomatoes. While this would be a dismal score for any title, it's bad when compared to the original film. While it's the second-lowest rated Cameron feature behind Piranha II: The Spawning , the original movie stands at a serviceable 70 percent fresh score.

One potential demerit to the series is that the stars are less recognizable than Curtis and Schwarzenegger would have been in the mid-1990s. However, the 13-episode season will end up featuring a longer running time than the original 141-minute movie. This could potentially allow more time to invest in the characters and develop them through the show's run.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience response to the original True Lies is similar to critics, only giving the film a marginally superior 76 percent. It remains to be seen how audiences react when the show becomes officially available. However, the fact that it is perhaps less beloved than other James Cameron titles like The Terminator, Titanic, or Avatar may allow the series some wiggle room to find a better reception following its premiere.
