After mowing down numerous people over a three-block stretch on the famed thoroughfare while firing shots into the crowd, the suspect -- identified by sources as Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42 -- allegedly got out of the truck wielding an assault rifle and opened fire on police officers, law enforcement officials briefed on the incident told ABC News. Officers returned fire, killing the suspect who was not immediately identified, sources said.
Two Israeli nationals were injured in the attack in New Orleans, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said in a statement. "It is reported that two Israeli citizens were injured in the ramming and shooting incident in the French Quarter in New Orleans. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consulate General in Houston are in contact with the hospitals and the families of the injured. At the direction of Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, a representative of the consulate is on his way to New Orleans," the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson said.
