Aikman didn’t hold back when addressing the disappointing start to the Dallas Cowboys season on Thursday.

Former Dallas Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman applauds the Dallas Mavericks who beat the Utah Jazz in Game 5 of an NBA first-round playoff game at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, April 25, 2022. The Mavericks won 102-77., the Hall of Famer and ESPN Monday Night Football analyst took aim at CeeDee Lamb and the other Dallas wide receivers for their performances through the first six games.

“I think the routes are terrible,” Aikman said. “I think they run terrible routes and and I’ve thought that beyond this year, and I think CeeDee’s got to improve in his route running. And as a quarterback, if you’re not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it’s hard to play the position.”. Prescott threw a red-zone interception on a pass attempted toward Lamb for the second week in a row in Sunday’s loss to Detroit..

“I’m an old school guy, and I just believe that practice matters. I believe that having the team together matters. So if I knew I was going to sign him anyway, I would have him signed so that he’s working out with my quarterback and doing the things that he should be doing,” Aikman said. While Dallas ranks third in the NFL in passing offense, much of that can be attributed to the necessity of throwing the ball rather than trying to move it on the ground.

And of the wide receivers on the roster, Lamb’s 467 receiving yards aren’t far behind the 599 cumulative yards gained on catches by any other player at the position. Lamb and Jalen Tolbert have accounted for 71% of the team’s production from the wide receiver spot.“I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run. Usually if they do, it’s because they’re anticipating they’re going to get the football on that play. But if they’re not, they don’t. And it all ties together.
