Troubled childhood of a young man whose cannabis-induced psychosis led to him killing own grandmother

Taken from his mum as a young boy, his paternal grandmother Marlene McCabe took him into her home and provided a loving and stable family life. It would have been the kind he had longed for in a quiet neighbourhood of Blackpool.

He thought "someone was coming to get him". That was also the year his family discovered he had started smoking skunk.During a GP appointment in October 2014, accompanied by his ever-supportive aunt and granny, Conor admitted he had been smoking the drug for over a year. He had managed to quit for a few days but this led to him becoming extremely paranoid. His family were forced to close all the curtains in the house to .manage his erratic behaviour.

In December 2017 it became clear to Conor's family that he had not "escaped the clutches of cannabis" and Sharon was forced to confiscate his drugs. This led to Conor losing his temper with his aunt forced to call the police over his aggressive behaviour. When officers turned up Conor "burst out crying" and his family was simply advised to go and see the GP.

By this point both Marlene and Sharon "felt their lives were in danger". Conor had begun constantly drinking water and would often giggle and look to the side as if someone was talking to him. During a GP appointment shortly after the incident in Stanley Park the doctor noted Conor seemed to find such events "amusing". Marlene, who accompanied Conor to the appointment, defended her grandson and said he "wouldn't hurt a fly" but Sharon discreetly, and unsuccessfully, tried to catch the doctor's eye to indicate this wasn't true.

At Preston Crown Court in April 2020 Conor pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility. He was detained indefinitely at Guild Lodge, a secure mental health unit, but despite his actions in taking 71-year-old Marlene's life his wider family continue to support him.
