Gabrielle could become a hurricane next week.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle continued to track westward in the Atlantic but is expected to stay away from the United States. Forecasters are also watching another tropical wave expected to move off the coast of Africa soon.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle was struggling in the central Atlantic on Thursday, and forecasters are thinking the storm may stay out at sea during its lifespan.Gabrielle could still become a hurricane by early next week, according to the National Hurricane Center. The latest forecast track keeps the center of the storm well away from the United States and to the east of Bermuda. Forecasters on Thursday were also tracking a disturbance poised to move off the coast of Africa soon. Gabrielle, the seventh named storm of 2025 in the Atlantic, had 50 mph winds on Thursday, according to the hurricane center. The storm is not expected to strengthen until possibly later this weekend, and the hurricane center’s forecast suggests it could become a hurricane on Monday. There were no watches or warnings in effect for the storm, which was far from any land areas in the central Atlantic. As of the last update, at 4 a.m. CDT Thursday, the center of Tropical Storm Danielle was located about 845 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands and was tracking to the west-northwest at 15 mph.The hurricane center said Gabrielle should stay on a west-northwest or northwest path over the next few days. It will track well to the north of the Leeward Islands as well as Puerto Rico, and then turn more northward, keeping the Bahamas out of its path. By the end of the forecast period the storm is projected to be well to the northeast of Bermuda and headed out to sea.The hurricane center was also tracking a disturbance that will move off the coast of Africa on Friday.Forecasters expect it to track to the west over the next few days. A second tropical wave that was in the east-central Atlantic was taken off the watch list on Thursday. The hurricane center said earlier today that the system was no longer expected to develop. The Gulf and Caribbean remained quiet on Thursday, and no disturbances are expected in either area for the next week or so.
