Tropical Storm Erin is expected to strengthen over the next few days as the storm moves westward.Tropical Storm Erin formed Monday in the eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean, likely to become the first Atlantic hurricane of 2025.
As of late Monday morning, Erin was about 280 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph , the NHC said. It was moving west at about 20 mph .There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect for either storm, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said. The average date for the first hurricane is August 11, but the first major hurricane typically does not occur until September 1. The storm is expected to curve northwest later in the week, which should keep the main part of Erin north of the islands in the Caribbean, according to AccuWeather. Puerto Rico could experience some rough surf and seas and perhaps some squalls. The exact track of Erin and whether it will impact the east coast is still uncertain, but a major hurricane passing nearby could still bring s significant increase in seas, surf and rip currents to the beaches, including the Jersey Shore and Long Island, next weekend into the following week.
