The storm could rapidly intensify prior to landfall.

Photo: Eddie Seal/Bloomberg via Getty Imagesacross the central Atlantic, Caribbean and now the Gulf of Mexico, posing a significant threat to coastal Texas , including Houston .The storm has a narrow window during which it is likely to intensify, with forecasts calling for it to make landfall near Matagorda, Texas , as a Category 1 storm early Monday morning.

Storm surge flooding, which occurs when hurricane winds pile water onshore, flooding areas above normally dry ground, is expected to range from 4 to 6 feet along and just to the northeast of where the storm's center makes landfall. In Galveston Bay, storm surge flooding is forecast to reach 3 to 5 feet above normally dry land, if the storm hits at high tide.

The flood threat is forecast to stretch inland by several states, potentially all the way into Missouri.Warmer air temperatures and hotter seas from human-caused climate change yield greater amounts of water vapor in the atmosphere, which these storms can wring out as heavy rains.Since emerging from the Yucatan Peninsula, the storm has battled dry air, which has disrupted its ability to form thunderstorms near the center of circulation and prevented it from intensifying over the Gulf of Mexico.
