Tropical Storm Bertha is continuing a slow westward trek along the northern Gulf Coast Thursday morning, bringing tropical storm conditions to parts of the central Gulf Coast while gradually weakening.
As of 5 a.m. EDT, Bertha was centered about 165 miles west-southwest of Panama City, Florida, and about 50 miles east-northeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. The storm was moving west at 5 mph with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. Its minimum central pressure — a measurement of the storm's strength, with lower pressure generally indicating a stronger system — was 998 millibars.
The forecast keeps Bertha moving west, then gradually picking up speed through Friday as it tracks near or along the northern Gulf Coast. While the storm is expected to weaken over the next several days, tropical storm conditions will continue across portions of the coast. A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect from the Okaloosa-Walton county line in the Florida Panhandle westward to Morgan City, Louisiana, including metropolitan New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain.
A Tropical Storm Warning means tropical storm conditions, including sustained winds between 39 and 73 mph, are expected within the warned area, generally within 36 hours. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect from west of Morgan City to Cameron, Louisiana, and for Lake Maurepas. A Tropical Storm Watch means tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 24 to 48 hours. The warning east of the Okaloosa-Walton county line has been discontinued as Bertha continues moving farther west.
Tropical-storm-force winds — winds of at least 39 mph — extend up to 105 miles from the center of the storm. Recent observations highlight the storm's ongoing impacts across the northern Gulf. An offshore buoy near Orange Beach, Alabama, recorded a wind gust of 49 mph, while an oil platform in the Mississippi Canyon reported sustained winds of 45 mph with gusts reaching 56 mph.
