Emergency services are warning residents in Borroloola to prepare as Tropical Cyclone Megan developed into a category 3 cyclone and could potentially intensify into a category 4 as it tracks towards the NT coast.
Emergency services are warning Borroloola residents to prepare, or leave and take shelter in a safer place, before the cyclone makes landfall.The cyclone is sitting in the Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to move southward and make landfall on Monday night or Tuesday morning.
"Borroloola as of this morning has a heightened risk that was intensified with the intensification of Tropical Cyclone Megan," NT Police Superintendent Sonia Kennon said. "When the tropical cyclone does arrive we need you to take shelter inside and stay inside until the all-clear is given by authorities," Superintendent Kennon said.
The cyclone is forecast to make landfall as a category three late on Monday or early Tuesday morning between Nathan River and the NT/Queensland Border. On Sunday afternoon a cyclone warning alert was in place from Groote Eylandt to Mornington Island and stretched as far inland as Borroloola, McArthur River Mine, Robinson River, Numbulwar, Nathan River and King Ash Bay, but did not include Ngukurr or Mornington Island itself."It's quite a large tropical cyclone, taking up around one third of the Gulf of Carpentaria area," Ms Gamble said.
"We could hear cupboards tipping over downstairs and we were just trying to gauge where would be best for safety," Ms Stevenson said."We got boots and clothes on and were waiting for another update, but the BOM said the system was moving south."The Gemco mine on Groote Eylandt, including one of its key jetties, received significant damage during the storms, someone from the mine told the ABC.
