South Houston stayed unbeaten by turning back previously unbeaten Deer Park in a showdown...
Deer Park's Malachi Martinez-Miller goes hard to the bucket despite the defense of Syntrel Evans and Mijai Mickles. Martinez-Miller scored eight straight Deer Park points in the fourth period, getting the team within two but no closer.SOUTH HOUSTON - They say it's not how you start that matters, it's how you finish. Well, South Houston High School's boys basketball team made sure that the start not only mattered but so did the finish.
That 9-0 start and 7-0 conclusion were sparked by some red-hot or at least timely outside shooting from behind the arc. South Houston crushed the maroon and gold in 3-point goals, enjoying an 8-1 advantage. Twelve of those 16 points were due to bonus buckets. Deer Park had just closed within 44-41 on a putback when the next trip down the court saw Kamron Webb drain the team's eighth 3-point goal of the night with 55 seconds to play.
There were no terrific scorers from the Trojans roster, just a bunch of grinders. Joseph Buckner led the charge from behind the arc in finishing with 14 points, almost all of that total with 3-point scores. Josiah Ware had 13, leading the team in buckets from inside the arc. while Webb and Jordan Buckner had five points each."We wanted to just dictate tempo, it wasn't necessarily all about turning the ball over and getting steals. But then we had a lot of fouls go against us early.
"I can't remember our two-point field goal percentage, I think it was in the 20 percentile and we were 1-for- 11 from the 3-point line for nine percent. It's just tough to do that in a district game when you're down 9-0 to start with. SoHo's a good team. They play hard, well-coached. They've got some good players. It's hard to come back from double digits in the fourth quarter," Bright said.
The only thing that was keeping Deer Park in the game were South Houston turnovers and Deer Park hitting its last eight free-throw attempts to finish at 89 percent for the second half as opposed to the team only canning 50 percent in the first half .
