SPONSORED: Retired Navy Adm. James Stavridis, a former NATO supreme Allied commander, will present Trinity University's 13th annual Maverick Lecture.

Trinity University will host retired Navy Adm. James Stavridis as the speaker for the 13th annual Maverick Lecture. Stavridis — a decorated veteran, best-selling author, columnist and chief international security analyst — will present his lecture, “Beyond the Horizon: 21st Century Global Security and Risk,” on Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Laurie Auditorium.

Stavridis spent 37 years in the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of four-star admiral with more than 50 medals. Among his many commands, he spent four years as the 16th supreme Allied commander at NATO, where he oversaw operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Syria and the Balkans, and counter-piracy off the coast of Africa. He also served as commander of U.S. Southern Command, with responsibility for all military operations in Latin America from 2006-09.

Following his military career, he served for five years as the 12th dean of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts. In 2016, he was vetted for as a potential vice president by presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and subsequently invited to Trump Tower to discuss a cabinet position in the Donald Trump administration.

The Maverick Lecture is an event that honors the late Maury Maverick Jr., the legendary civil rights lawyer, former member of the Texas Legislature, Marine and iconoclastic newspaper columnist. The lecture explores topics that defined Maverick’s place in American civic discourse, including threats to constitutional liberty, with particular emphasis on the First Amendment, issues of poverty and race, Western occupation of developing world countries and the moral requirements of war.
