Trinity coach Jerheme Urban celebrates after the Tigers scored twice in the second half to come back against Hardin-Simmons in the first round of the Division III playoffs Saturday at home.Tucker Horn found Ryan Merrifield for a 38-yard touchdown pass with 2:16 remaining, and No. 5 Trinity withstood three chances at the end zone in the final 12 seconds to rally and knock off No. 9 Hardin-Simmons 14-7 on Saturday afternoon in an NCAA Division III first-round game at Trinity.
The game — played in low-40 degree temperatures, a blustery wind and a steady drizzle — was a strategic battle throughout. Trinity had a pair of first-half turnovers, but the Tigers defense didn’t allow Hardin-Simmons to take advantage. Finally, just before halftime, the Cowboys took over at Trinity’s 36-yard line following a short punt.
“People have said that our conference isn’t very physical, but I think that people saw that it really is,” said Urban. “We were able to run the ball between the tackles, convert some third downs, and being able to run the ball opened up some opportunities in the passing game.”
