Tributes for Trugoy RIP
TRIBUTES FLOODED in as news spreads about the passing of De La Soul legend Trugoy the Dove.The pioneering rapper, real name David Jolicoeur, died of natural causes and was battling undisclosed illness. He had previously revealed he was living with congestive heart failure.Long Island-born Trugoy, which was backwards for ‘yogurt’, found fame as De La Soul’s debut 1989 album 3 Feet High and Rising was released.

In that first masterpiece LP, the trio playfully channelled a ‘hippy’ vibe, Afrocentrism and Afrofuturism, subverting the increasingly masculine direction of hip hop. De La Soul, which Jolicoeur formed with Kelvin ‘Posdnuos’ Mercer and Vincent ‘Maseo’ Mason, were part of a wider hip-hop collective that included the likes of A Tribe Called Quest and Jungle Brothers.
After 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul’s music matured as the group explored the genre rather than chase crossover success.
