Tributes are flowing for Maribyrnong City Labor councillor and former mayor Sarah Carter following her sudden death aged 45.
A council in Melbourne has been left"shocked and saddened" by the sudden death of one of its councillors, who was also the first female to serve as mayor three times.
She served as mayor in 2011, 2020 and 2022 - the first woman on the council to hold the position three times - and was often touted as a future Labor MP. "Maribyrnong's first three-time female mayor, councillor Carter was only the second Mayor in our municipality's history to achieve Emeritus status – the highest recognition for distinguished service in local government leadership.
"Sarah and I trusted each other wholeheartedly, there are not many people in life who you can say that about. We gave each other advice and always knew we had each other's backs."
