Under the Roman Republic, tribunes represented the interests of the plebeians, or commoners, as opposed to the noble patricians. Tribunes and other magistrates would preside while seated on a raised platform in a Roman basilica, and the platform was known as a “tribunal.” When “tribunal” first entered English by way of Old French, it retained the classical Roman meaning of a “judgment seat,” though it could be used more figuratively for the throne of divine judgment in Christian depictions of the Day of Reckoning.
