More than a year after the deadly Palisades Fire swept through the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles , the community is still grappling with the aftermath as the trial of the man accused of starting the blaze is set to begin.
The fire, which killed 12 people and destroyed thousands of homes, was one of the most destructive in California history. The trial of John Rinderknecht, who faces charges including arson of an inhabited structure and malicious destruction by means of fire, is expected to draw intense attention as residents continue to struggle with insurance claims, construction delays, and the emotional toll of losing their homes.
The fire began on Jan. 1, 2025, when a small blaze ignited in the hills above Pacific Palisades. Prosecutors allege that Rinderknecht started the fire, which smoldered undetected in root systems before flaring up again on Jan. 7, rapidly spreading due to strong winds. The fire destroyed entire neighborhoods, leaving behind vacant lots filled with weeds and wildflowers, punctuated by the skeletal frames of new homes under construction.
Of the more than 450 construction projects in the area, only 17 homes have been certified for occupancy, highlighting the slow pace of recovery. Residents like Meghan Wald, whose home survived the fire, now live elsewhere but return weekly to support the few businesses that have reopened. While she is grateful to see familiar shops coming back, she acknowledges that the Palisades will never be the same.
The trial, which includes jury selection expected to last several days and opening statements midweek, is projected to take about two weeks. Prosecutors have geolocation data placing Rinderknecht near the fire as it grew and a Bic lighter found in his car; they also claim he was upset about personal failures and expressed anger to his Uber passengers.
Defense attorney Michael Haney argues that the government lacks solid evidence linking Rinderknecht to the initial fire and that first responders left a smoldering fire, which he has cited in a civil lawsuit against the city. The trial has stirred mixed emotions among residents. Lena Loh, who opened a skin care clinic three months before the fire, says she feels no relief from the prosecution, viewing it as a symptom of broader city mismanagement.
The fire also looms over the Los Angeles mayor's race, with incumbent Karen Bass facing criticism for the recovery pace and challengers like reality TV personality Jesse Pratt, who lost his home and has made rebuilding inefficiency a campaign issue.
