Junior running back Trey Morris is a big part of what the Cypress Falls Golden Eagles do. Morris rushed for 169 yards on 28 carries and four touchdowns during a 35-17 victory over Cypress Woods Oct. 15 in District 16-6A action.
He scored on runs of 1, 5, and 39 yards in the first half and from 6 yards out in the second half. The Golden Eagles were coming off a 16-0 shutout loss against Bridgeland in a game Morris was held to 65 rushing yards on 12 carries. “We had to bounce back from the last game, so we had to come back a lot harder,” Morris said. “They have a lot of good defensive players, so we knew what the gameplan was, we just had to stick to it.” Morris also crossed the 1,000 yards rushing mark for the second consecutive season against Cypress Woods. He’s rushed for 1,038 yards on 146 carries and 12 touchdowns so far. He has five games with at least 120 yards including a pair of 200-yarders.“He’s a really tough runner, takes care of the football, and does a great job of pass protection,” Brister said. Last year, Morris rushed for 1,069 yards on 168 carries and six touchdowns. Brister thinks Morris is a little faster. “Obviously, you’re a year older, you’re a little stronger, just more experience as a running back, he was a great player last year, too, though,” Brister said.“Our whole offense makes him a part of that so it’s really just a credit to our offensive line and everybody else that’s giving him some room to run,” Brister said. “Of course, he’s doing his part as well, but that’s our offensive philosophy and it takes buying in from everybody to do it and they’re bought in.” At the end of the day, Brister said the coaching staff tries to put the team in the best position to move the football. “Whether that’s him or quarterback run or passing game, it’s just kind of the way we scheme it up on the weekends,” Brister said.“That’s with everybody on our team, we’re a young football team, we got a lot of young kids playing so it’s a good thing because they’re playing well and then there’s always the ability for them to get better every week,” Brister said. Morris is just one of many great leaders on the team, Brister said. There are 20 returning lettermen, including seven starters. Senior quarterback Jakob Leavatts is next in touchdowns with eight. “There’s a whole lot of guys that do a really good job of keeping our focus and some of those leaders are young guys,” Brister said. “We’re fortunate right now to have a team full of guys that truly want to play for each other and play for their school. That’s a big part of what we do.”“I got a lot more in the tank, I could have broke for a lot more but the O-line did their thing. …It could be better though,” Morris said.
