A massive tree fell on a car in Covington, Washington, trapping two people inside. Firefighters used cribbing and hydraulic jacks to free the victims.
Two people had to be rescued when a massive tree slammed down on their car, trapping them inside, amid strong wind gusts in the Covington area Monday night. There were 30 to 50 mph wind gusts when the tree uprooted near Cedar Valley Elementary on 194th Ave. around 8:30 p.m. Initial reports from the King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) said a good Samaritan tried to help the victims before first responders arrived.
Puget Sound Fire (PSF) said firefighters built a crib box to support the tree and take pressure off the car. They then used hydraulic jacks to lift the tree enough to pull the car out. 'Cribbing is a temporary framework, usually constructed of timbers, that provides a solid base of support to material above. This framework provides the means to support the object being lifted.' PSF said one person in the car was quickly freed, but it took firefighters a little more than an hour to free the second person
