Tommy Thompson, a former deep-sea treasure hunter, has had his civil contempt sentence ended after nearly a decade in jail for refusing to disclose the whereabouts of missing gold coins. However, he will now serve a two-year sentence for criminal contempt.
A former deep-sea treasure hunter who spent nearly a decade in jail for refusing to reveal the location of missing gold coins has had his civil contempt sentence ended by a federal judge in Ohio. However, he will remain incarcerated as he begins serving a two-year sentence for a related criminal contempt charge. U.S. District Judge Algenon Marbley stated on Friday that he no longer believed further imprisonment would compel Thompson to comply with court orders.
Thompson had been held in contempt of court since December 15, 2015, and faced a daily fine of $1,000. The judge calculated Thompson's total civil contempt fine at $3,335,000. This ruling ends a long legal battle stemming from Thompson's discovery of the S.S. Central America, known as the Ship of Gold, in 1988. The gold rush-era vessel sank during a hurricane off South Carolina in 1857, carrying thousands of pounds of gold that contributed to an economic panic. Despite an investor lawsuit and a federal court order, Thompson has consistently refused to cooperate with authorities seeking to locate 500 coins minted from some of the recovered gold, valued at approximately $2.5 million. He has claimed, without providing specifics, that these coins were transferred to a trust in Belize. Thompson's defiance led to his arrest in Florida in 2015 after he failed to appear for a 2012 Ohio hearing concerning the missing coins. He pleaded guilty in April 2015 to skipping the hearing and received a two-year prison sentence. The federal appeals court rejected Thompson's argument in 2019 that the 18-month limit on contempt of court incarceration applied to his case. They ruled that his refusal violated the terms of a plea agreement
