Travis County is getting more money to better fight the opioid epidemic. On Monday, the county was awarded a $1.6 million grant from the Bureau of Justice Assis
tance as part of the FY 2024 Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Site-Based Program. This funding will support the launch of the Jail-Based Substance Use Intake Program, an initiative aimed at extending care for inmates being released from the Travis County Jail into the community.
Maggie Luna says she was addicted to opioids for 20 years and is now executive director of the Texas Harm Reduction Alliance. A recent study shows that in the first six months after leaving jail, former inmates are eight times more likely to die from an overdose. The innovative program announced on Monday starts in jail and continues through release and re-entry into the community.
Transition Support: Reentry plans will be developed to ensure smooth transitions back into the community, including ongoing treatment and support.
