Several sites around Ohio make great quick-trip destinations for travelers who love history and the macabre.

Hidden Marietta offers walking tours that combine the settlement’s rich history with the weird and macabre. Visitors can also tour the allegedly haunted mansion where the tour company is based.

The Hidden Marietta staff investigate local legends through historical research, including perusing old newspaper accounts, to learn the foundations of the stories. It was built in 1859 by one of the wealthiest men in town, Douglas Putnum, for his young wife Eliza. She poured her heart and soul into the house, but only got to enjoy it for three years before she passed away. There are legends of her remaining in the house ever since that time.“A flashlight tour of the Anchorage is probably one of the creepiest experiences we offer,” Keller said.

Tours are offered most days except Sundays through Nov. 5. Tour prices begin at $10, and $5 for children., was one of the key American forts during the War of 1812. Built during a brutally cold winter, the fort was the site of hundreds of deaths, some of cold and disease, others during battle. Many of those soldiers were buried on the grounds — and, of course, some of those are reputed to haunt the reconstructed fort, now an Ohio History Connection site .
