A Portsmouth travel boss has been sentenced to 33 months in prison after defrauding 47 clients to pay for private school fees.

Shelley Simpson , a 46-year-old travel agency owner from Portsmouth , has been sentenced to 33 months in prison after orchestrating a sophisticated Ponzi scheme that defrauded 47 innocent holidaymakers of nearly 300,000 pounds.

Operating through her business, Sphere Events Limited, between 2019 and 2022, Simpson lured clients with the promise of exclusive discounts on luxury vacations and high-profile events. However, the courtroom revealed a systematic pattern of deception where the funds provided by clients were not used to secure bookings but were instead diverted to maintain a lavish lifestyle and cover personal expenses.

Most shockingly, a significant portion of the stolen money was used to pay for her three children's tuition at the prestigious Portsmouth Grammar School, where fees reach approximately 18,000 pounds per year. This betrayal of trust was not limited to strangers; Simpson targeted her own friends and acquaintances, exploiting their confidence to fuel her fraudulent activities. The human cost of Simpson's greed was evident in the testimony of her victims, many of whom were left in financial and emotional distress.

One client, Jodie Stallard, transferred over 37,000 pounds for a dream family excursion to Barbados, only to discover that the luxury trip had never been booked. Simpson had used this specific payment to clear previous debts of 61,000 pounds, leaving the family devastated and unable to travel. Another victim, Andy Fung, found himself in a nightmare scenario just two weeks before his honeymoon to the Maldives.

After paying 6,000 pounds, he discovered the company had gone into liquidation, forcing him to pay an additional 11,000 pounds at the last minute to save his trip. In other instances, customers were told their tickets to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar or the Glastonbury Festival were invalid, while evidence emerged that Simpson had attended the very festivals she failed to book for her clients.

Dominic Davies paid 4,500 pounds for a trip to Corfu, only to be lied to about flight delays and errors by British Airways, which Simpson used as a cover for her failure to pay. This uncertainty ruined the final days of his family holiday and cost him an extra 6,000 pounds in emergency travel costs. Simpson's method was calculated and callous.

She insisted on full upfront payments, convincing clients that she had special connections, such as knowing the manager of the Ritz Hotel, to justify the deep discounts. By the time clients realized their flights and hotels did not exist, the money was already gone. The scheme began to unravel after Hampshire Police and Portsmouth Trading Standards received a staggering 90 complaints from 47 different individuals.

During the subsequent investigation, authorities discovered that Simpson had even searched the internet for 'Prison for fraud', indicating she was aware of the legal peril she faced while continuing to invest in building work for her home. The legal proceedings at Portsmouth Crown Court highlighted Simpson's desperate need for approval, as she claimed she simply wanted people to be her friend and hoped they would recommend her services to others.

This facade of friendliness was used as a weapon to gain the trust of her social circle. The judge noted her callous disregard for her victims, who were left stranded or financially crippled while she enjoyed the benefits of their money. By admitting to fraudulent trading, Simpson has finally been held accountable for the emotional and financial wreckage she left behind in her pursuit of social status and familial privilege
