A new meta-analysis of 70 randomized controlled trials highlights the effectiveness of trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) for pediatric PTSD. The study emphasizes the importance of evidence-based treatments and warns against misinformation circulating online.

A meta-analysis is considered the strongest form of evidence available for a given research question. A new study analyzed data pooled from 70 randomized controlled trials investigating pediatric PTSD treatments. Cognitive-behavior therapy with a trauma focus, it found, is the best first-line treatment for pediatric PTSD .

However, misinformation about established mental health treatments is spreading, often due to unqualified individuals making claims not grounded in scientific evidence or stating personal experience as fact. As a clinician with over 25 years of experience, I've observed how exposure to online misinformation impacts patients dealing with PTSD symptoms. Social media trends may convince them that there's a debate about a particular PTSD treatment's efficacy when, in fact, it's well-established with strong empirical support. Sometimes, they're convinced another treatment might be better, despite scant or nonexistent data supporting its use. The most distressing aspect is when patients reject proven treatments or choose approaches data suggests are harmful. A meta-analysis combines data from multiple studies, providing a more robust analysis than individual studies. This study analyzed data from 70 randomized controlled trials of psychological interventions for pediatric PTSD, including over 5,000 children (average age 12) diagnosed with PTSD or subthreshold PTSD. The researchers examined four types of TF-CBTs (trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy): prolonged exposure, cognitive processing, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), and multidisciplinary treatments combining various techniques. While each therapy was more effective than waitlist controls, TF-CBTs showed the largest reduction in trauma symptoms, lasting even six or more months after treatment. EMDR ranked second in effectiveness, but long-term symptom reduction data was lacking. The study concluded that TF-CBTs should be the first-line treatment recommendation for pediatric PTSD
